Working Together for Greater Success
On 30th of May 2010 during the ARFU (Asian Rugby Football Union) General meeting in Kuala Lumpur, the ARFU councils have drafted the ARFU 2011 – 2019 Strategic Plan in order to prepare Asia for the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
We are going to meet again in Dubai on 5th December 2010 to endorse this Strategic Plan.
I believe this Strategic Planning is vital for STAR in order to create the centre of Rugby Excellence for the grass root level in Malaysia.
I will table out what was discussed during the ARFU workshop, and hopefully, we, as the old boys of STAR can use this as the formula for STAR’s rugby success.
Vision
Rugby in Asia – More than a Sport
Mission
- Focussing on Youth
- Inspiring Excellence
- Promoting the Spirit of Rugby and its values
Strategic Priorities
Our (ARFU) priorities are to:-
- Grow Rugby in Asia
- Improve competition standards in Asia
- Maximise the value of the 2019 Rugby World Cup (RWC)
- Improve governance and leadership
- Maximise the profile and commercial value of rugby in the region
Values
Rugby in Asia has unique values and characteristic which are essential for us to preserve, promote and protect.
They are:-
- The spirit of Asian Rugby
- Friendship
- Teamwork
- Health
- Discipline
- Respect
- A sport for all
In the whole, the translations for these values are summarized in a few simple words:-
Malaysia – Ragbi Boleh! (ARFU endorsed slogan in Malaysia)
Can we, as the old boys of STAR strategize the same kind of formula, in order to make STAR the centre of rugby excellence?
We will need to work with the Students, Coaches, School Management & the parents in order for us to sustain whatever success that we are going to achieve soon.
We have our own strengths, weaknesses, opportunity and threats to think about.
STAR is lucky to have two of the most experience coaching staffs in Malaysia (one is still actively playing for Malaysia), not to mention having the most number of rugby fields in one area. Our strength will also rest on all the stakeholders (students, coaches, school management, parents and us old boys – in that order) working together.
However, we do have our weaknesses. As I was growing up playing rugby for STAR one of the main obstacles that we were facing back then were the parents (not all of us have Tamunif as a parent!).
The other weaknesses are lack of gymnasium facilities and nutrition (sup ayam and telor 4 biji is not enough nowadays!)
However, weaknesses are there for us to overcome.
