Adding the Value to make us the BEST

Gentlemen,

I've thought of ways of how can I contribute back to STAR. I'm not a millionaire nor am I politician (no money and no power). It took me since March last year to come out with the idea for this program. The International Relations Program which I believe will add value to our present education system and will make STAR students as future Global Leaders,

To be a Global Leader we will need to nurture these boys to be one at a very young age.

We've made our the presentation to STAR and MOE about a month ago. We've submit our Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to MOE. We are finalizing the MOA between STAR and Bryanston, and hopefully by 2011, STAR will set a milestone in Malaysia's Education System for the High Performance School Program.

Below is an overview of what the program is all about. We are going to use STAR's Cluster Niche in Rugby,English and Music as a tool to promote this program.  I hope one day I can organize a Q&A session between us  the Old Boys of STAR  and The Parents of STAR boys in order for us to understand more about this program.

The term 'Global Education’ refers to the extent to which global development issues are integrated within the formal curriculum. Global education is seen as a way of extending students’ views of the world by exploring their perceptions and connections, and helping them to recognise and think critically about different cultural, economic and political perspectives.

Global education can be understood through five concepts that provide a conceptual framework for thinking about issues and building them into the curriculum:

·        Social justice and equity

Understanding the importance of social justice as an element in both sustainable development and the improved welfare of all people.

·        Diversity

Understanding and respecting differences and relating these to our common humanity.

·        Globalisation and interdependence

Understanding how people, places, economies and environments are all inextricably interrelated, and that choices and events have repercussions on a global scale.

·        Sustainable development

Understanding the need to maintain and improve the quality of life now without damaging the planet for future generations.

·        Peace and conflict

Understanding the nature of conflicts, their impact on development and why there is a need for their resolution and the promotion of harmony.

Benefits

·        Encouraging discussion of development issues

By using partnership activities to investigate relevant global citizenship issues and encouraging learners to develop the skills and attitudes to become effective global citizens.

·        Embedding a global dimension in the curriculum

By adding value to the mainstream curriculum, through enhancing teaching and learning in a wide range of subjects by incorporating the global dimension.

·        Emphasising equality and reciprocity

By involving the active participation of school partners, each contributing and benefiting equally from the negotiation and agreement of joint aims and the realisation of shared outcomes.

·        Working towards whole school involvement

By involving several phases and curricular areas. A wide range of individuals is involved including learners, teachers, support staff, headteachers, parents and school governors. The partnership makes a key contribution to the school ethos.

·        Involving students

By ensuring students’ involvement in and commitment to partnership relationships, thereby contributing to motivating, meaningful and empowering learning experiences.

·        Contributing to teachers’ personal and professional development

By exposing staff to very different learning and teaching contexts. This broadens and deepens professional expertise and commitment to global dimension goals.

·        Engaging with communities

By seeking to actively involve and strengthen the local communities, where possible collaborating with diaspora communities. Community involvement brings new resources, financial and human, which contribute to the sustainability of the partnership.
