New boarding schools not a priority

The Federal Government will limit the setting up of new boarding schools to improve the performance of existing ones.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also Education Minister, said it also cost more to maintain boarding schools.

"We will focus on improving the standard of existing schools under the School Improvement Programme.

"People think that boarding schools are elite schools but normal schools are equally good," he said after a 1Malaysia luncheon at Dataran Seri Serdang at Serdang yesterday.

He said the Government would only build two to three boarding schools a year.
