PTPTN In The Headline Again But For The Wrong Reason

PTPTN to stop giving loans for expenses from 2013

The National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) plans to stop giving loans for expenses to students from institutions of higher learning in view of its increasing burden.

Its chairman Datuk Ismail Mohamed Said said the board at its meeting on Oct 31 decided to reduce its huge burden due to the large number of borrowers.

"However, loan financing for tuition fees will be given as usual," he told reporters after presenting Welfare Department aid to the elderly and poor in Kuala Krau parliamentary constituency in Simpang Peragap near here.

Ismail, who is also Kuala Krau MP, said that to date some 1.87 million students had borrowed up to RM41.6bil. — Bernama

Not proper for PTPTN to stop loans for expenses - Khaled

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin described the proposal by the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) to stop giving loans for expenses as "not proper", stressing that those in the low-income group would need it.

He said the costs would be too high for students from poor families and those in the low-income group.

"PTPTN has not submitted its proposal yet but if it does so, the ministry would have to scrutinise the matter," he said.

"I believe that there should be a loan especially to those from poor families," he said after opening a volleyball championship organised by Vision Christian Fellowship JB, here.

PTPTN chairman Datuk Ismail Mohamed Said was reported as saying that the corporation planned to stop giving loans for expenses to reduce its increasing burden.

Ismail said that to date, some 1.87 million students had borrowed RM41.6 billion from the corporation.

No move yet to stop 'loans for expenses': Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR - The government has the final say on whether the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) will stop giving out expenses loans by 2013.

Corporation chairman Datuk Ismail Mohamed Said said yesterday it was only a proposal and had not been finalised.

Expenses loans are seperate from study loans and are granted to help students cover daily costs such as food, accommodation, books and transport.

So tell you Mr Chairman, better give up your post than to cause unnecessary mental hardship to millions of poor students or maybe you should take time to read the PTPTN's raison d'être .....
