University Students May Now Stand For Election: Universities & University Colleges Act Ruled Unconstitutional By Appeal Court

The Court of Appeal today ruled Universities & University Colleges Act 1971 which prohibits university students from participating in politics as unconstitutional and against the Federal Constitution.
The Court decided 2-1 in favor of the application brought by four students of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) challenging provision 15(5)(a) of the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971.
The application was submitted early last year after they were disciplined for campaigning in Hulu Selangor by-election in April 2010.
The four students had already graduated and had received their degrees at the university convocation in September.
