Mistakes in international brochure put country to shame

"Taman Nerara", apparently, is a 130-million-year-old rainforest in Malaysia. According to the brochures distributed at the Malaysia Pavillion at the Shanghai World Expo that is.

Loke Siew Fook (DAP – Rasah) showed the brochure to reporters at Parliament this morning and highlighted at least 11 spelling errors in it.

Among the misspelled words in the brochure include: "nulticultural", "decelopment" and "visitous".

"To know more about Malaysia, we 'incite' you to step into the Malaysia Pavilion, which gives fascinating glimpses of the country's attractions," read one sentence, using "incite" instead of "invite".

Loke said the brochure was an embarrassment and gave Malaysia a bad impression .

"This brochure is distributed to all visitors to the Malaysia Pavillion," said Loke. "Why didn't any of the Tourism Ministry officials proofread this? There are simply too many mistakes.

"Even 'locations' is spelled 'locationgs'. Maybe this was done by someone from Terengganu."

The brochure bore no details of its publisher, although the last page included Tourism Malaysia's web address.

The cover also bore the official emblem of "Malaysia, Truly Asia".

"A few days ago, the Education Ministry said it would employ English experts from overseas to help improve the standard of English language education at schools in this country," said Loke.

"I suggest these experts also go to the Tourism Ministry and teach them a few lessons."

Loke urged Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen to do something about the matter.

Neither the Tourism Minister nor her deputy could be found at Parliament this morning for comments.
