Come On, Jakim - Why Is Roti Halal?
The JAKIM says that they have found "microscopic" evidence of pork DNA in Tabasco sauce and HP steak sauce. They have said that because of this, both these sauces are 'haram'. Both the producers of the sauces have denied that they use any 'pork based' ingredients to make their sauce.
In the US, Tabasco sauce has been certified halal by Muslim halal certification associations. Tabasco sauce is chilli sauce, made from chilli peppers grown on Avery Island in Louissianna.
The JAKIM says "pork DNA" was detected. They must have used a microscope and some high tech equipment to detect the 'DNA'.
Here is some other information I dug up. To make bread you must use yeast. The yeast digests the sugars found in the flour to produce alchohol and carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide (and also the alchohol) help to make the flour rise and make the bread 'spongy'. Here is what I found out:
- All alcoholic beverages, including those produced by carbonic maceration, are produced by ethanol fermentation by yeast. Wine and brandy are produced by fermentation of the natural sugars present in fruits, especially grapes.
- Ethanol fermentation, also referred to as alcoholic fermentation, is a biological process in which sugars such as glucose, fructose, and sucrose are converted into cellular energy and thereby produce ethanol and carbon dioxide as metabolic waste products.
- Ethanol fermentation is responsible for the rising of bread dough. Yeast organisms consume sugars in the dough and produce ethanol and carbon dioxide as waste products. The carbon dioxide forms bubbles in the dough, expanding it into something of a foam.
- By fermentation the yeast converts carbohydrates to alcohols and carbon dioxide - for thousands of years the carbon dioxide has been used in baking. Because yeasts perform this conversion in the absence of oxygen, ethanol fermentation is classified as anaerobic. Ethanol fermentation occurs in the production of alcoholic beverages and in the rising of bread dough.
So is roti halal? Or why is roti halal - when there is production of alchohol (ethanol fermentation) by the yeast used during the bread making process. Since microscopic levels of 'pork DNA' have been detected by Jakim's microscopes, can they not detect microscopic levels of alchohol in the bread making process?
The Quran always has a solution. Here is a solution :
Surah 5:4 They consult you concerning what is lawful (halal) for them? Say, "Lawful (halal) for you are all good things (Qul uhilla lakumu al tayyibaatu), including what the hunting dogs catch for you." You train them according to GOD's teachings. You may eat what they catch for you, and mention GOD's name thereupon. You shall observe GOD. GOD is most efficient in reckoning.
(Arabic : 'Yas-aloonaka maaza uhilla lahum. Qul uhilla lakumu al tayyibaatu wama allamtum minal jawaarihi mukallibeena tuallimoonahunna mimma allamakumul - llaahu fa-kuloo mimma amsakna alaykum waz-kuroo isma-allahi alayhi wa-ttaqoo-llaaha inna-llaaha saree-u alhisabi').
Say : "Lawful (halal) for you are all good things" (Qul uhilla lakumu al tayyibaatu)
So anything that is good for you is halal. Including what the hunting dogs catch for you. So please make a decision :
- is bread good for you?
- is bread not good for you?
- are the animals that the hunting dogs catch, good for you?
- are they not good for you?
It seems simple enough.
