Malaysian rainforests have more than six thousands medical herbs

Malaysian rainforests are teeming with more than six thousands natural herbs which can be developed and used as nutritional and cosmetic products to boost the country's revenues, according to a statement made by the Malaysian Forest Research Institute's director Dr. Abdul Latif Mohammed. Dr. Mohammed who also said that there are more than 20 medical plants herbs and plants from which cosmetic products and perfumes could be extracted.

Dr. Mohammed added that thanks to to modern technology, it would not be impossible for us to tap the vast potentials of our rainforests to push the Malaysian economy forward and attain the position of a high-yielding revenue economy.

Dr. Mohammed told the Malaysian News Agency (Bernama) that the Malaysian Forest Research Institute discovered that chemical compounds extracted from some Malaysian herbs had anti-oxidants, fire-proof, anti-bacterial and insecticidal properties. He revealed that the institute established a center for herbal technology in order to assist the health care industry in realizing commercial value from local herbaceous products. He pointed out that the research program is in line with the government's plans to boost health care in compliance with national approved policies for herbaceous products manufacturing. (IY)
