Why pay for SMS when you can send them for free

Now you can send free SMS to your friends and foes, wives and mistresses free of charge courtesy of GMail. But for now this free service is limited to Maxis and Digi.

Free SMS is available to your list of friends or email recipients and senders.  Click on the name, click more and choose SEND SMS. Then just fill in the phone number in the pop-up box and an SMS box will open. Type your message and presto.... nasi lemak free!

GMail gives you maximum free 50 credits (which you can send 50 SMS) but whenever someone replies to your SMS the credit will be replenished to 50 - so practically it is unlimited.

The SMS you send will bear your GMail email address and not your phone number.

Backing Up GMail to your PC

Another point of interest - you can easily backup your GMail to your computer by using GMail backup. I have been using GMail since 2004 with a group of friends exchanging books - so normally after about 9 month my box will be up to 6 GB (which is a dangerous level). So whenever it reaches 6GB, I will duly copy all my email by using the program to my PC then I will clean up my GMail box to make it 0GB.

You can check GMail Backup here.
